Corpse flowers blossom together, double the stink

Jun 02, 2017 - Chicago Tribune

There was an unusual amount of excitement -- and stink -- in the air at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe on Thursday, as the second of two giant corpse flowers blossomed.

Corpse flowers, or titan arums, are notorious for emitting a rotten aroma, similar to that of decomposing meat, during the 24 hours or so they bloom. Java was the first of the "Titan Twins" to begin blooming Tuesday night, and Sumatra, the shorter of the two at almost 5.9 feet, began blooming early Thursday.
