For Guatemalans, an election is a rare and bewildering event

Today's election in Guatemala will be important to fans of politics. It should be the first time in this Central American country's history that one elected civilian government has survived to transfer power to another. But for the majority of Guatemala's population, grindingly poor Indians barely able to write, the electoral ballots won't make any more sense than an impossible crossword puzzle.
