Gerrymandering ruling likely kills Mich. challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday dealt a likely fatal blow to a Michigan lawsuit seeking to throw out legislative maps as unconstitutional when the justices declined to set a standard for limiting partisan gerrymandering.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the conservative majority in a 5-4 decision on cases out of North Carolina and Maryland, said such claims involve "political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts."
