The NCAA on Wednesday banned the University of Minnesota football team from post-season play next season, and stripped the men's basketball squad of one scholarship next year. Those penalties and a few others are less severe than what could have been imposed by the NCAA's Committee on Infractions. The committee said it opted for milder penalties because of several mitigating factors, including the university's own investigation and its efforts to correct the problems on its own.
