Treasurer candidates heat up race for overlooked statewide office

Nov. 01--A pair of state lawmakers are mounting aggressive bids to become Illinois' next treasurer, an office in charge of investing the state's money that's often used as a political steppingstone.

The campaign is contentious in part because it's either up or out for veteran Republican lawmaker Tom Cross of Oswego and it's a chance for Democratic Sen. Michael Frerichs of Champaign to win a down-ballot post that's been held by the GOP for much of the past 20 years.
