Biography

Ai-jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and co-director of Caring Across Generations, serves on the Ford Foundation Board of Trustees. Caring Across Generations is a national coalition of 200 advocacy organizations working to transform the long-term care system for aging Americans, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. She is also the author of The Age of Dignity: Preparing for the Elder Boom in a Changing America.

Poo began her career in the mid-1990’s as a volunteer at the New York Asian Women’s Center supporting survivors of domestic violence in the Asian community, and went on to work as an organizer at the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence (CAAAV). In 2000, she helped create Domestic Workers United (DWU), an organization promoting the rights and dignity of all domestic workers in New York. In 2010, Poo and DWU were instrumental in New York State passing the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, the first law in the country to guarantee domestic workers basic labor protections such as overtime pay, paid leave, and legal protections from harassment and discrimination.

In 2007, Poo co-founded the National Domestic Workers Alliance as a national voice for the growing workforce of cleaners and caregivers in homes across America. She went on to co-found Caring Across Generations in 2011 to address the growing need for elder care solutions as the nation ages.

Poo is a trustee of MoveOn.org and serves on numerous other boards, as well. She has been recognized among Fortune’s 50 World’s Greatest Leaders and Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, and she has been the recipient of countless awards, including a 2014 MacArthur "Genius" Award, the Open Society Institute NYC Community Fellowship, and the Woman of Vision Award from the Ms. Foundation for Women.

She has a BA from Columbia University and honorary degrees from a number of institutions, including the New School and the City University of New York.
