Alexandre G. Verheyden
Partner
Alexandre Verheyden's practice focuses on competition/antitrust law, representing major corporations before the European Commission, European courts, and national authorities. He also has significant experience in transatlantic mergers.
Alexandre's experience involves abuse of dominant position/monopoly offense, cartel, merger, and state aid cases. He represented DoubleClick in its merger with Google and BT in its various mergers since 1995 (including MCI, AT&T, Infonet, and Radianz). He obtained a favorable judgment in a €500 million damage claim for abuse of dominant position against Belgacom Mobile and the largest fine ever imposed on a dominant enterprise by the Competition Council. He represented Dole in the banana cartel case and Bouygues Telecom in several state aid cases against the French government. He also represents Toyota in all its competition law-related European distribution matters.
Alexandre is vice chair of the Communications Committee of the International Bar Association. He received an award from the Belgian American Educational Foundation and is a winner of the 2012 Antitrust Writing Awards for the article "EU Court of Justice Provides Guidance on Abusive Margin Squeezes" written in collaboration with Serge Clerckx. He also is a regular speaker at conferences.

Jones Day is advising mobile telecom operator KPN Group Belgium SA before Belgium's Constitutional Court in its challenge to a law imposing an €180 million fee for the renewal of licenses to operate a 2G mobile network.

Jones Day advised Eastman Chemical Company, a global chemical company that manufactures and sells a broad portfolio of chemicals, plastics, and fibers, in its $4.8 billion acquisition and related $3.5 billion financing of Solutia Inc., a global leader in performance materials and specialty chemicals.
Level 3 Communications obtains antitrust clearance for acquisition of Global Crossing
Jones Day represented Level 3 Communications, Inc. before antitrust authorities in the U.S. and Europe in its $3 billion acquisition of Global Crossing Ltd., which combined two leading Internet backbone networks.
Entreprise des Postes et Télécommunications successfully challenges attempt by Luxembourg competition law authority to prohibit "quadruple play" package offer
Representing Luxembourg's incumbent telecom operator Entreprise des Postes et Télécommunications ("EPT"), Jones Day successfully challenged the very first case in which the Conseil de la concurrence (competition law authority in Luxembourg) imposed interim measures for alleged anticompetitive behavior.
BASE obtains favorable decision in claim against Belgacom Mobile for abuse of dominant position
On behalf of Dutch-based telecommunications operator KPN and its subsidiary BASE, Jones Day challenged abuses by Belgacom Group of its dominant position, which had radically distorted the competitive environment in the Belgian telecommunications market.
BASE wins Brussels Court of Appeal case regarding mobile telecom termination fees
Jones Day obtained a favorable outcome for our mobile telecommunications client BASE, KPN's subsidiary in Belgium, from the Brussels Court of Appeal.

Jones Day represented the Starmap Alliance of nine European mobile telecom operators (Retevision Movil in Spain; O2 in the U.K., Germany, and Ireland; Telenor in Norway; Sunrise in Switzerland; Pannon in Hungary; and One in Austria and Italy) before the European Commission regarding a proposal to offer seamless international mobile telecom services, particularly to multinational companies.
Telenet Operaties wins dismissal of abuse of dominance case in unique EU judgment
Jones Day represented Telenet, Belgium's largest cable TV operator, in an abuse of a dominant position and telecommunications regulatory dispute with Belgacom, the incumbent telecom operator in Belgium.
Bayer secures worldwide antitrust approval for Visible Genetics acquisition
On behalf of Bayer Corporation, Jones Day coordinated global antitrust merger filings for its acquisition of Visible Genetics, a Canadian pharmacogenomics company, which involved the acquisition of molecular diagnostics tests, hardware, and software used to determine genetic sequencing.
Mobistar defends Belgian regulatory attempt to reduce mobile phone service termination charges
Jones Day represented Mobistar, the second largest GSM operator in Belgium, in connection with an attempt by the Belgian telecommunications regulator, BIPT, to force a reduction of mobile operators' termination charges.
VersaTel in competition law dispute with Belgium incumbent telecom operator
On behalf of communications network operator VersaTel International, Jones Day is handling a litigation dispute with the incumbent telecom operator in Belgium, Belgacom, involving an alleged abuse of dominant position.
