The Commercial Club of Chicago resulted from the 1907 merger of two predecessor Chicago clubs: the Merchants Club (organized in 1896) and the Commercial Club (organized in 1877). Its most active members included George Pullman, Marshall Field, Cyrus McCormick, George Armour, Frederic Delano, Sewell Avery, Rufus C. Dawes, and Julius Rosenwald. The club has promoted Chicago's economic development for generations and championed member Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago (1909), also known as Burnham's plan. In late 1919, a group of established gentlemen purchased a track of 139 acres at Devon and Pulaski, in what was then Morton Grove. After a great deal of discussion and planning they took the first steps to establishing Bryn Mawr Country Club. The Golf Course is a Langford design 18-hole championship golf course. Over the many years of the Club's existence improvements have been made to the course and many of the first saplings have grown tall and majestic over our course. During improvement plans and upgrades to the course, the true nature of the original Langford design has always been kept. Bryn Mawr has always been recognized by its peers as a meticulousy groomed and well kept course. On the original property was a rambling country style frame building that was converted into our first clubhouse. In 1926 construction began on a new and beautiful English Tudor clubhouse, which was completed in 1927. This clubhouse served its many members and generations of families well for fifty nine years. On February 11, 1986 tragedy struck as a fire took the clubhouse from us. A temporary pre-fabricated Clubhouse, served us for two seasons and in our 69th year we opened our 4th Clubhouse on May 28, 1988. The opening season was a warm renewal of Bryn Mawr traditions as well as the institution of some new ones. Bryn Mawr is a premier private Club that continues to offer the best service and amenities to its membership. Increasing offerings for families with small children, tennis and pool programs as well as golf and the finest dining that rivals the finest establishments.
