Fortress Investment Group's private equity activities focus on operating businesses across five major sectors including financial services, transportation, senior living/healthcare, real estate, media & telecommunications, leisure and energy infrastructure. The firm seeks to acquire undervalued assets and companies that can be improved through intensive asset management. Fortress places capital across the entire capital structure, actively deploying first and second lien senior secured debt, mezzanine financing and equity investments.Through the Fortress Investment Funds and through direct co-investments, Fortress acquires cash flowing investments and businesses that are often backed by tangible physical and financial assets. The Fortress Mortgage Opportunities Funds make investments in residential mortgage backed securities and related investments. The firm is also affiliated with two externally managed publicly traded companies, Newcastle Investment Corp. and Eurocastle Investment Ltd. Newcastle Investment Corp. invests primarily in real estate related loans and securities. Eurocastle Investment Ltd. invests primarily in operating real estate.

The Investment Office is responsible for managing the University's financial assets of approximately $6.0 billion, in accord with policies established by the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees. The Investment Committee advises the Board with respect to investment of Endowment, Trust, and the General Funds of the University. It is responsible for developing and recommending, for adoption by the Board, policies relating to such investments. The Committee is also ultimately responsible for overseeing the implementation of these policies. The Investment Committee currently meets four times a year in accordance with the Bylaws of the Board of Trustees. Between meetings, it discharges its responsibilities through a Sub-Committee which has been meeting approximately once a month. In addition, the Board of Trustees has a Sub-Committee on Proxies which provides oversight with regard to the University's investment policy with respect to (1) social issues and (2) contested shareholder proxy resolutions. Its membership is drawn from the Investment Committee.
