Biography

Arlan D. Melendez, chairman of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, was recently named the American Indian Community Leader of the Year by the Nevada Indian Commission.Melendez was selected for his visionary leadership and steadfast advocacy on health care issues on behalf of American Indians statewide and nationally.

Melendez was first elected to the RSIC Tribal Council in 1987. He has served nearly 26 consecutive years on the Tribal Council.

He also serves on the U.S. Health and Human Services National Tribal Advisory Committee, which is directed by Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Phoenix Area Tribal Health Steering Committee.

In 2008, and under Melendez's guidance, the RSIC opened a $20-million health care center in Reno. The 65,000-square-foot facility has recorded more than 81,000 patient encounters this year.

Just two weeks ago, he was elected the Western Region vice president of the National Congress of American Indians to represent tribes in Nevada, Arizona and Utah. This is the third time that Melendez has held the position.

An armed forces veteran, Melendez served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including one tour of duty in Vietnam from 1969-70.
