Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research is the largest, independent, nonprofit foundation in North America devoted solely to supporting research on the effects of alcohol on health and behavior and on the prevention of alcohol-related problems. The Foundation was established in 1982 as the Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation (ABMRF), a 501(c)(3) organization, with the support of the malt beverage industries of the United States and Canada. This important relationship continues today. Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, the Foundation has supported research projects of more than 560 academic investigators at over 260 universities and research institutions in the United States and Canada. Many of North America's top researchers formed the basis for their groundbreaking work with Foundation grants early in their careers. We invite you to learn more about the Mission of the Foundation. ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research fundamentally exists to improve the quality of people's lives at home and in the workplace. This is accomplished by accumulating new knowledge through pioneering biomedical, behavioral, and social science research on alcohol consumption and abuse prevention. The Foundation's financial support enables independent investigators to pursue innovative studies by: examining factors influencing transitions in drinking patterns and behavior, assessing the effects of moderate use of alcohol on health and well-being, identifying mechanisms underlying the behavioral and biomedical effects of alcohol, and encouraging biobehavioral/interdisciplinary research on the etiology of alcohol misuse. Results are disseminated widely throughout the scientific community, often encouraging new, interdisciplinary studies which pick up where Foundation-supported work left off. As a result, a dynamic, synergy of activity is achieved through presentation of papers at international conferences and publication of reports in scientific journals and textbooks. In its celebrated 25th year, the Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation modified its name and logo to become ABMRF/The Foundation for Alcohol Research, honoring a rich history in a new, streamlined way. The interrelated double-swirl logo reflects energy and innovation and represents the many dualities at work: industry and academia; biomedical and behavioral studies; healthful and unhealthful effects; and a two-pronged program of grants and conferences.
