Career History
President
1995 - 2019

Today, more than 175,000 students attend Miami Dade College, a state-supported college with seven campuses, two centers and numerous outreach centers. We are the largest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the most highly regarded colleges in the nation. Each of our campuses has its own distinct identity and specialties. But, they also offer a broad base of general education courses, allowing you to take first-year classes at any of our campuses (except the Medical Campus). That means you get to decide what campus you want to attend. Take all of your first-year classes at one campus, or follow the path of some of our working students and take morning classes near your home and evening and weekend classes near your place of work. As you begin to take more advanced courses, you may need to focus your studies at a specific campus where your program is offered.

Take Stock in Children (TSIC) recognizes the fact that a high quality education is the fundamental foundation for individual growth and success. We are also acutely aware of the lack of universal access to learning resources for low-income, at-risk students and the detrimental effect this deficiency is having on our national prosperity.  It is for this reason that Take Stock in Children, for the past 14 years, has been successfully closing the achievement gap among the most impoverished youth from every county in Florida.  We provide an invaluable opportunity to end the generational cycle of poverty and educational barriers plaguing many of Florida's academically promising, yet socio-economically disadvantaged children.  Since 1995, Take Stock in Children has provided over 16,000 of Florida's students with the academic intervention, assistance and support to ensure they have met their high school graduation requirements.  Over 1 million volunteer mentor hours have been generated from over 12,000 community-based volunteer mentors resulting in a 92% graduation rate for our scholars.  This is considerably higher than Florida's average of 65% and drastically higher than their low-income peer group currently at 57%.  We have achieved these outstanding results by providing our students with a comprehensive, long-term mentoring and advocacy program that begins in middle school and continues through to high school graduation with a guaranteed college scholarship.  Our program is based on the principal that given extensive support, motivation and accountability, children will work hard to ensure they graduate from high school and attain a college degree.  We fund our college student services through a unique public-private fund raising model, and our mentors generously volunteer their mentoring services to our children.
