FRANCINE G. NAVAKAS

Svend and Elizabeth Bramsen Professor in the Humanities

Francine G. Navakas holds the Svend and Elizabeth Bramsen Professor in the Humanities endowed chair at North Central College. She is a professor of English and associate academic dean with more than 30 years of service at the College.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Chicago; a master of arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley; and a doctorate from the University of Chicago.

She has written and published critical essays and has received four National Endowment for the Humanities grants. In 2000, Navakas was named the eighth recipient of the Harold and Eva White "First Citizen of the College" Award during commencement ceremonies at North Central College. She has received three Dissinger awards, annually given in recognition of outstanding teaching, scholarship and service to the College. Navakas is director of Integrative Programs and Interdisciplinary Studies; was coordinator of the History of Ideas program; founded the College's Gender and Women's Studies program; and has been an active member of the Association for Integrative Studies, serving on its board and editing its Issues publication.

She is the first recipient of the Svend and Elizabeth Bramsen Professor in the Humanities endowed chair, which was established in 1992 by John D. Bramsen in honor of his parents.

North Central College was founded in 1861 as Plainfield College in Plainfield, Illinois. Classes were first held on November 11 of that year. On February 15, 1864, the Board of Trustees changed the name of the school to North-Western College. The college moved to Naperville in 1870. The name was again changed in 1926 to North Central College. The endowment of the college was $79 million as of June 30, 2010
