Biography

Mike Gruber is the must-hire trial lawyer for large, complicated cases with enormous stakes. Unlike many litigators, he isn’t afraid of the number of zeroes in a claim – throughout his career, clients’ dollars at risk have risen into the billions, including three such cases in 2014. Mike represents companies, executives, bankruptcy trustees, wealthy families, trusts and individuals as plaintiffs and defendants on their most sensitive, high-risk, confidential and contentious matters.

He is as skilled in litigation avoidance and pre-litigation strategy as he is in state and federal courts in Texas, as well as in other jurisdictions, such as the Southern District of New York. With subject matter ranging from warring families in major probate disputes, the jurisdiction of bankruptcy courts (a seminal case, Wellness/Sharif, won in the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015), a billion-dollar fraudulent transfer case, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, and intellectual property ownership claims, to energy and real estate investments gone bad, Mike has the proven experience, confidence and drive that clients seek and referral sources trust.

Clients who hire Mike quickly recognize why he is praise-worthy – he designs a comprehensive Trial Plan, often in the hundreds of pages, which starts at the end – the appeal – and works backwards to the original petition or answer. He builds the arguments and evidence at every stage, and anticipates every possible outcome, eliminating surprises and operating from a position of strength that is fully informed. As Mike describes it, "The only way for a David to take down a Goliath - someone with superior resources - is to out-plan, out-execute and out-work them. That is what a legal good slingshot is made of." In addition, unlike many lawyers and firms, Mike fairly aligns fee arrangements with the goals and interests of his clients. He's willing to have skin in every case.

Mike sees several horizon issues that are concerning to senior executives and business owners. He is brought into the largest and most complicated multi-generational disputes of high-profile families and expects estate planning, probate and trust fights to continue – and, in fact, escalate – for years to come.

We are a global law school community of distinguished alumni residing throughout the United States and in more than 75 countries. Our faculty is well-recognized for its outstanding teaching and scholarly leadership in such areas as dispute resolution (including litigation), international and comparative law, intellectual property, corporate, commercial and tax law. We offer a rich curriculum of over 165 upper class courses in subjects such as oil and gas, health and environmental law. Over one-half of our upper class courses have fewer than 25 students; three-fourths have fewer than 50 students. The first year class is divided into three sections (two full-time and one part-time evening) of approximately 90 students each, with small legal writing sections of approximately 25 students each. We emphasize the vital skill of legal writing through our six-hour legal research, writing and advocacy course and an elective three-hour edited writing seminar. The law quadrangle provides an idyllic setting for learning. The Underwood Law Library houses the largest private law collection in the Southwest. The Godwin Gruber Lawyers Inn offers students an elegant backdrop for study breaks and meals. A secure wireless network is available in all law school buildings. Most importantly, our small size fosters a scholarly community that features interaction with faculty, attention to your personal needs, and lifelong friendships. We have an active student government, five respected law journals, six specialized legal clinics and two related projects, numerous moot court and mock trial competitions, and one of the finest Career Services Offices in the country. In addition, students participate in the thriving intellectual life of the school. We have been chosen as the national headquarters for the Appellate Judges Educational Institute. In 2006 the Institute brought over 225 appellate judges and attorneys from across the country to SMU, including Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the Chief Justices of Texas and Indiana, and the Chief Judge of the Sixth Circuit. Recently, the 35 students in our SMU Oxford program assisted with our Supreme Court Summit in which Justices O’Connor, Ginsburg, and Breyer participated, as did Justices from Europe's highest court, the European Court of Justice. In spring 2007, we were honored to host a group of distinguished Justices from the ECJ on campus. A thriving community of scholars call Dedman Law home. Our distinguished faculty, coupled with our intelligent and inquisitive student body personify Robert Dedman's words, "Leadership starts with learning."

The Dallas Bar Association or DBA is a professional organization providing resources for attorneys and the public in the city of Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1873, the DBA is a voluntary professional association of 10,000+ lawyers. It is dedicated to the continuing education of its members, as well as community programs. For years, the Dallas Bar Association headquarters were housed in the offices of the then-current president. In 1937, headquarters were established in a small space under the stairs of the Old Red Courthouse. Ten years later, the DBA was the state’s first bar association to incorporate. Incorporators envisioned the Association someday being housed in its own building.
