Biography

George Mencio Jr. is a partner in Holland & Knight's Miami office and serves as the firmwide co-leader of the Corporate, M&A and Securities Practice Group, the chair of firmwide International Initiatives and is a member of the firm's Directors Committee. He practices principally in the areas of corporate and international law, with emphasis on cross-border mergers and acquisitions and joint venture transactions, dispute resolution, and administrative matters relating to international trade and commerce and the transportation industry. His clients include multinational concerns in the transportation, tourism, mining and agricultural sectors, major airlines, cruise lines, software and technology companies, operators and managers of hotel projects, and providers of goods and services in the international arena. Mr. Mencio has extensive experience in mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures; international commercial transactions, such as franchising, distribution and licensing agreements; and is accustomed to working with foreign counsel on cross-border transactions and disputes. Mr. Mencio has conducted multiple international arbitrations in the United States, Europe and Latin America.

At the University of Miami School of Law, he was Articles and Comments Editor of its Law Review, and authored "Civil Procedure, Developments in Florida Law," 35 U. Miami L. Rev. 855 (1981). Mr. Mencio began his law career with Holland & Knight in 1981 and was named partner in 1987.

Mr. Mencio is Past Chairman of the Global Initiatives Committee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

The Florida Bar is the integrated bar association for the state of Florida. It is the third largest such bar association in the United States. Its duties include the regulation and discipline of attorneys. As elsewhere in the United States, persons seeking admission to the bar must pass a moral character screening, in this case administered by the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. Admission to the bar includes passing a background investigation, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, and the bar exam, which tests both the common law through the Multistate Bar Examination and Florida law through written state essays and state-specific multiple-choice questions. The Florida Bar is home of one of the nation's premier board certification programs. Over 5,000 members of the bar are certified in one or more of 24 legal specialty areas including civil trial, business litigation, labor and employment, and marital and family law. Board certified attorneys must submit to a rigorous peer review process, prove substantial involvement and education in the specialty field, and pass a written examination. The Florida Bar's headquarters building and annex are located in Tallahassee, three blocks from the Florida State Capitol.
