Mississippi's primary university, The University of Mississippi in Oxford grants bachelor's and graduate degrees in a range of professional and academic fields, and carries out some of the most important scientific research taking place in an academic institution. University of Mississippi's campus activities make for a vibrant student life that even appeals to local residents. Mississippi has approximately a dozen divisions and schools, including: *School of Business Administration *School of Engineering *College of Liberal Arts *School of Law *School of Pharmacy Graduate students may also gain professional medical training at the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing or Medicine. Mississippi's research activities include the environmental, wildlife and conservation research conducted through the Sea Grant program. Student media includes a widely circulated school newspaper and a college radio and television station. The public even benefits from some of the campus activities, such as performances held at Mississippi's performing arts center and exhibits at the campus museum. Students who meet certain academic requirements are automatically admitted to University of Mississippi. Financial aid may be available and is awarded, in part, based on financial need.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center, located in Jackson, is the state's only academic health science center. UMMC includes seven health science schools: medicine, nursing, dentistry, health related professions, graduate studies, population health, and pharmacy. (The School of Pharmacy is headquartered on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford.) Enrollment in all programs is more than 3,000 students.
