Biography

John Hart is Of Counsel at Simpson Thacher. John has represented clients on a wide variety of tax matters, including IPOs; formation of private investment funds; REITs and real estate transactions; asset manager M&A; and publicly traded partnerships.

John was named one of the leading tax lawyers in the United States in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2017 and The Best Lawyers in America 2017. John is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a member and past President of the New York City Tax Club and a member and past Chair of the Private Investment Fund Tax Forum.

John has presented on UP-C and TRA transactions at the annual Practising Law Institute partnership tax conferences in San Francisco and NY and has also presented at conferences sponsored by New York University Real Estate Institute, the International Bar Association, the International Tax Institute, the Yale School of Management and other groups.

John received his J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1979. He received his A.B. with High Distinction and Highest Honors in English Literature in 1976 from the University of Michigan, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) is a voluntary bar association for the state of New York. NYSBA was founded in 1877 with the stated goal to cultivate the science of jurisprudence; to promote reform in the law; to facilitate the administration of justice, and to elevate the standards of integrity, honor, professional skill, and courtesy in the legal profession. Its first President was David B. Hill. Among the reforms in the legislation signed into law creating the association was the removal of the restrictions on the admission of women to the practice of law. In 1896, NYSBA proposed the first global means for settling disputes among nations, what is now called the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
