Birmingham-Southern College is a four-year, private liberal arts institution founded in 1856 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Birmingham-Southern College is the result of a merger of Southern University, founded in Greensboro, Alabama, in 1856, with Birmingham College, opened in 1898 in Birmingham, Alabama. These two institutions were consolidated on May 30, 1918, under the name of Birmingham-Southern College. The campus is situated on 192 wooded acres three miles west of downtown Birmingham. The College has 45 academic, residential, administrative, and athletics buildings/facilities. New facilities since 1998 include a 100,000 square-foot science center, a renovated humanities center, an admission welcome center, two residence halls featuring suite-style accommodations for 167 students, student center, fitness center, football complex, new Fraternity Row, and an urban environmental park/lake.

Northwestern University is a private institution founded in 1851 to serve the Northwest Territory, an area that now includes the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota. In 1853 the founders purchased a 379-acre tract of land on the shore of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. They established a campus and developed the land near it, naming the surrounding town Evanston in honor of one of the University's founders, John Evans. After completing its first building, its first building in 1855, Northwestern began classes that fall with two faculty members and 10 students. Northwestern has three campuses and a total of 12 Schools and Colleges (one of which is located in South Florida. Two campuses are located on Lake Michigan, a 240-acre campus in Evanston, the first suburb north of Chicago, and a 25-acre campus in Chicago. One campus is located in Doha, Qatar. Northwestern University combines innovative teaching and pioneering research in a highly collaborative environment that transcends traditional academic boundaries. Chicago Children's Choir (CCC) is a multiracial, multicultural choral music education organization, shaping the future by making a difference in the lives of children and youth through musical excellence. CCC serves over 4,000 singers throughout Chicago, ages 8 to 18, through the following choral programs: 1) the In-School Program in 79 Chicago schools; 2) the Neighborhood Choir Program, an after school program in ten Chicago communities, including Albany Park, Austin (new in 2016), Beverly, Englewood, Garfield Park/Off the Street Club, Humboldt Park, Hyde Park, Lincoln Park, Pilsen/Little Village, and Rogers Park ; 3) DiMension, a specialized ensemble for boys with changing voices; 4) Voice of Chicago, CCC's premier ensemble.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) was founded by Theodore Thomas in 1891. The ensemble makes its home at Orchestra Hall in Chicago and plays a summer season at the Ravinia Festival. The music director is Riccardo Muti, who began his tenure in 2010. The CSO is one of five American orchestras commonly referred to as the "Big Five".
