Biography

Karl V. Hopkins is general counsel of the Atlantic Council. As a member of the managing executive team, Karl oversees all of the firm’s legal affairs and advises on a wide range of legal and security issues. He also serves on the Atlantic Council’s Executive Committee and Nominating and Governance Committee, and chairs the Council’s Security Committee.

Outside of his role at the Council, Karl is a partner and global chief security officer at Dentons law firm. He is responsible for the firm’s global security. He counsels the firm on international strategic, business and political intelligence, security and threat analysis. His practice concentrates on providing strategic advice to clients in relation to their global operations, including due diligence and compliance investigations, physical and cyber security assessments, country and political risk assessments, and threat analysis. This includes providing enterprise risk management and organizational resiliency advice.

Karl leads a team that provides clients with strategic and legal advice in relation to crisis and incident response. The team has experience in managing various types of crisis including physical and cyber incidents, insider threats, and reputational impacts. He also assists clients with communication and crisis management policies and protocols.

Karl also concentrates on the development of international energy and infrastructure projects. In addition to advising clients in the United States, he has represented clients on matters in more than fifty countries. He has experience managing matters relating to large asset-based transactions, including the sale of oil and gas interests and the development of both onshore and offshore oil and gas production facilities, pipelines, refineries, terminals, and related infrastructure projects.

In addition to his transactional experience, Karl has represented clients in various arbitration tribunals including the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
