Established in 1919 as the Department of Commerce of UNC Chapel Hill's College of Arts, the School was renamed the Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1991 to honor two prominent American business families and benefactors of the School: philanthropist Mary Lily Kenan Flagler and her husband, Henry Morrison Flagler. The renaming was in recognition of a generous gift from Frank Hawkins Kenan, another Kenan family member and benefactor of the School's Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.

It was conceived and designed by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, and established in 1819. UVA's initial Board of Visitors included former Presidents of the United States Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Monroe owned the initial site of the University, which was mostly farmland. His law office and farmhouse are now the site of Brown College at Monroe Hill, a residential college at UVA. UVA is one of the eight original Public Ivy universities, and it is the only university campus in the United States that is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Maverick Capital’s investment process is driven by intensive, fundamental bottom-up research. They deploy capital to individual investment opportunities that it believes offer the highest returns relative to risk, regardless of index weightings, market capitalization or style orientations. Their research is augmented by a top-down view of individual industries, as well as the efforts of their quantitative research team. While fundamentals still drive security selection, the quantitative research effort plays an important role in Maverick’s portfolio construction, security selection and risk management. The firm’s investment team is organized into six industry sector teams: Consumer, Financials, Healthcare, Industrials, Media & Telecom and Technology. The industry sector teams are supported by two discipline research teams: private investments and quantitative. The firm’s founder – Lee S. Ainslie III – has ultimate responsibility for all portfolio decisions for Maverick Funds and related Separate Account Clients.
