The Wexner Foundation and the Wexner Heritage Foundation (now part of The Wexner Foundation) were established by Leslie Wexner in 1984. The Wexner Heritage program was designed to provide young North American Jewish volunteer leaders with a two-year intensive Jewish learning program, thus deepening their understanding of Jewish history, values, and texts and enriching their leadership skills. By the end of 2011, over 1700 North American Jewish leaders from 31 cities will have participated in the program. In 1988 The Wexner Foundation introduced a Fellowship Program for outstanding rabbinical students and graduate students in Jewish education and Jewish communal service programs. The same year, the Foundation established a grants program for academic institutions of all types to build and improve training programs for Jewish community professionals. Eventually, the Fellowship Program was expanded to include top candidates for academic Jewish studies and the cantorate. By the end of 2011, over 400 outstanding Jewish professional leaders from a wide array of religious affiliations and professional groupings will have participated in the Wexner Graduate Fellowship/Davidson Scholars Program. Additionally, in 1988, the Wexner Israel Fellowship Program was created. Annually, up to 10 outstanding mid-career Israeli public officials are selected to study for a master's degree in the mid-career program of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. The goal of the fellowship is to provide Israel's next generation of public leaders with advanced leadership and public management training. By the end of 2011, 207 Israeli public officials will have participated in the Israel Fellowship, including leaders who have gone on to become Directors General of government ministries, Generals and Commanders in the Israeli military, and top advisors to Prime Ministers. The Wexner Foundation appeared early on the scene of Jewish private philanthropy and in many ways played a special role in pioneering a new field that has grown to include dozens of private foundations that devote themselves on a national and international scale to the needs of the Jewish people. The Wexner Foundation has never wavered from its focus upon Jewish leadership, and its professionalism, standards of program excellence, and strong relationships with Jewish communities and organizations have created a model of practice for Jewish private philanthropy that has passed the test of time.

The Ohio State University Foundation is the university’s primary fundraising and gift-receiving organization. It was founded in 1985 as a non-profit, tax exempt organization that advances the mission of Ohio State by pursuing and securing private support to benefit Ohio State students, faculty, programs, and/or facilities. The Ohio State University enjoys a robust history of private support from its alumni and friends. The fundraising results of almost three decades, combined with an understanding of the environment in which those results were achieved, provide the context and background from which the current operation, staffing model, strategic direction, and opportunities flow. The first focused campaign at Ohio State raised approximately $1 million to help build Ohio Stadium, which was dedicated in 1922. Fundraising was institutionalized 15 years later when the Board of Trustees created the Development Fund. In the fund’s first full year, more than 3,300 donors gave the university almost $82,000. In 1985, Ohio State announced its first major comprehensive campaign, with a goal of $350 million. The campaign successfully closed in 1990 with gifts and pledges over $460 million. In 1995, the university publicly launched its second major fundraising campaign with a goal of $850 million. Named “Affirm Thy Friendship” from a line in the alma mater, "Carmen Ohio," the campaign goal was later raised to $1 billion. When the campaign ended in 2000, the university had raised $1.23 billion, making Ohio State one of only five public universities at that time to have exceeded the billion-dollar mark. Total gift receipts raised during “Affirm Thy Friendship” exceeded all gifts received during the previous 123 years of the university’s existence. On October 4, 2012, the university launched the But for Ohio State campaign, a $2.5 billion fundraising endeavor that is the largest campaign in Ohio State’s history. More than 400,000 alumni and friends have contributed to the campaign so far. The campaign will allow Ohio State to implement visionary new ideas for the student experience and to use our breadth of disciplines to tackle complex global problems related to food production and security, health and wellness, and energy and the environment. Given the rising cost of academic excellence and the decline in state support of college and university budgets, private support will be critical to higher education in the 21st century. Ohio State is no exception, as the State of Ohio is allocating only 8 percent of its annual budget to higher education, which is attributable in part to a decrease in federal funding. Ohio State’s Foundation Board of Directors will be asked to play an increasingly important role in helping to shape the future of the institution.

The Federation, founded in 1926, has as its cornerstone the centuries old belief that social justice (Tzedakah) is a community responsibility. In practice, this means that each Jewish person has the duty to help other Jews – one responsible for the other – one family, one community, one people. Today there are more than 300 volunteers and 2,000 contributors involved in The Federation, dedicated to strengthening our own community and establishing a secure and vital future for Jewish life worldwide. We are mindful of our past and thank the leadership listed, whose tireless efforts created a strong foundation rooted in our core Jewish values.
