BTR Capital Management is a value manager whose equity investment approach combines a top-down sector-allocation process with bottom-up fundamental analysis. The firm seeks to invest in stocks that are under owned and attempts to purchase stocks they believe investors will accumulate in the future as the value of those stocks and their improving fundamentals become recognized. BTR evaluates equity investments based on the following criteria: valuation/downside protection, sector/theme fit, superior cash-flow returns on invested capital, quality of management, predictability and strong financial health. They also look for a catalyst for change, either in company fundamentals or in investor perceptions.BTR employs a basic, conservative fixed-income investment approach. They are monetarists and, as such, carefully watch the tone and actions of the Federal Reserve Board as well as government financing needs, economic strength and other factors affecting the supply and demand for credit. They believe that there are only a few important decision points each year with regard to the direction of interest rates and the shape of the quality and yield curves. Therefore, they choose not to actively trade fixed-income holdings. BTR strives to position portfolios to take advantage of expected trends and any temporary distortions that may exist. The firm's fixed-income investments may include corporate bonds and notes, government agency obligations, municipals and US Treasury securities. Fixed-income investments are selected based on the client's risk tolerance, existing yield spreads and the relative attraction of after-tax returns.
