The New School for Social Research provides an education grounded in history and informed by a legacy of critical thought and civic engagement. The school’s dedication to academic freedom and intellectual inquiry reaches back to the university’s founding in 1919 as a home for progressive thinkers and the creation of the University in Exile in 1933 for scholars persecuted in Nazi Europe. The interdisciplinary education offered by The New School for Social Research today explores and promotes global peace and justice as more than theoretical ideals.

The JPB Foundation marks a new beginning in the enduring philanthropic legacy of Jeffry M. and Barbara Picower. Born to ordinary circumstance and educated as a lawyer, the late Jeffry M. Picower used his exceptional skill as an investor to pursue a lifetime of giving. Jeffry and Barbara measured their success not by accumulated wealth, but rather by their ability to make the world a better place, particularly for those who were unable to do so for themselves. For decades, Jeffry and Barbara gave extensively to an array of medical, youth, and civic causes, with the goal of helping to create a better world. Among numerous high-impact grants made through The Picower Foundation, Jeffry and Barbara gave early backing to the Harlem Children’s Zone and organized the Picower Quality Childcare Initiative, a multi-partner program to improve the quality of child care within Palm Beach County. Their 2002 grant of $50 million to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which created the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, was then the largest donation the university had received from a private foundation.

Human Services Council (HSC) is the Voice of the Human Services Community. We represent thousands of not-for-profit organizations in New York and we advocate for the needs of the human services sector as a whole. Human service providers can accomplish more for their clients when they work together to increase funding, master complex new regulations, and orchestrate joint technology. HSC provides the structure to make that happen. Since 1991, we have helped bring together a diverse network of human services organizations to discuss ideas and take collective action on issues and concerns that impact the entire sector. Through advocacy, information, collaboration, and technical assistance, member organizations and their leaders are supported by the whole human services community in addressing their concerns of public policy, economic trends, and regulatory environment.
