Phillip R. Oppenheimer

Dr. Phillip R. Oppenheimer, Pharm.D., is Dean at Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences Professor, Pharmacy Practice. Dr. Oppenheimer joined the Pacific family as dean of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences 1997. Dean Oppenheimer conducted his undergraduate work at the University of California, Berkeley and earned his doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed a post-doctoral residency in hospital and clinical pharmacy. Throughout his career, Dean Oppenheimer has been active in state and national pharmacy organizations. In 1992, he served as President of California Pharmacists Association. He is the recipient of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacy Foundation's Research in Practice Award, California Legislator Leadership Award, and the National Association Community Pharmacists Leadership Award. He was named Dean of the Year, American College of Apothecaries in 2005 and Pharmacist of the Year by CPhA in 2004. In addition, he has consulted with governmental agencies and private industry.

During his tenure at the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Dean Oppenheimer, the faculty, staff, and students have accomplished much in the way of building and maintaining a reputation for excellence as well as the establishment of a student-centered educational experience. He is responsible for numerous facility upgrades and renovations in addition to the construction of the new clinics and classroom building. Dean Oppenheimer is credited with the expansion of recruiting efforts, increases in scholarship endowments, and expanded clinical experiences. Additionally, student pass rates on professional board examinations are at or near 100 percent for all three of the School's programs. In addition to infrastructure and personnel, Dean Oppenheimer strives to place students at the center of all that he does and has built a strong foundation for leadership within our student body. With the Dean's support our student organizations have become a hallmark of our professional and co-curricular programs.

Dean Oppenheimer has increased the budget of the School by three fold in the last decade. This increase in resources is reflected in the number and quality of faculty and staff, operational budgets and for developing a sophisticated and successful external funding program.

Under his direction, all three of the School's programs have enjoyed the highest level of academic accreditation achievable. The Dean demonstrates an emphasis on the support and advancement of scholarship and research. He has provided more than one million dollars in the past seven years for research facilities, equipment, support personnel, and has increased graduate student stipends. Over the last seven years average annual faculty research grants in the School total more than one million dollars with extensive participation in NIH and NSF grants and more than 95 percent of having faculty published. Additionally, the Dean has renewed and invigorated alumni relations programs in each of the School's programs, garnering nearly $30 million in gifts.
