Biography

Richard Wilders Professor of Mathematics North Central College
Richard Wilders Marie and Bernice Gantzert Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences

Richard J. Wilders is the first recipient of the Marie and Bernice Gantzert Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences endowed chair. He is a professor of mathematics, chairperson of the Mathematics Department, director of the Lederman Scholars and Community Scholars Programs, and special assistant to the president.

He received a bachelor's of science degree from Carnegie-Mellon University, and master's and doctoral degrees from The Ohio State University. He has more than 30 years service to North Central College.

Wilders has been described by President Harold R. Wilde as "a model of dedicated teaching and involvement in our community." Wilders is currently serving a three-year membership on the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of America. From 1991-2004, he directed institutional research and assessment at the College.

The endowed chair was established in 2006 thanks to a bequest made to the college by the estates of two sisters: Marie G. Gantzert, Class of 1933, and Bernice H. Gantzert, Class of 1938.

North Central College was founded in 1861 as Plainfield College in Plainfield, Illinois. Classes were first held on November 11 of that year. On February 15, 1864, the Board of Trustees changed the name of the school to North-Western College. The college moved to Naperville in 1870. The name was again changed in 1926 to North Central College. The endowment of the college was $79 million as of June 30, 2010
