RIM's client assets are primarily invested using a multi-style, multi-manager diversification approach. They offer investment advice regarding equities and fixed-income securities, as well as certain derivative instruments. They may also recommend that managed account clients invest in affiliated funds, certain other pooled investment vehicles, other open- or closed-end mutual funds, separate account programs, individual securities or other assets. RIM researches investment advisors for different asset classes and investment styles. They invest in pooled investment vehicles and/or manages funds to either fully or closely replicate indexes (some of which may be affiliated). In certain cases, they may create custom baskets of index and benchmark securities based on multiple risk factors specific to client portfolios utilizing automated model databases. RIM directly manages funds that are managed to money market guidelines and other fixed-income accounts. The portfolio manager focuses on diversification of risks including credit risk, interest rate risk and redemption risk. The firm's investment services involve managing third party managers who are responsible for discrete portions of the portfolios of RIM's clients.

SWIB seeks to produce the long-term, stable asset growth needed to meet the current and future obligations of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). The Core Fund is a fully-diversified, balanced fund. It has a significant amount of stocks, but also invests in other assets such as bonds, real estate and private equity. The asset allocation for the Core Fund is typical for large public pension funds. The Variable Fund is an all-stock fund. Investments are only invested in domestic and international stocks. The allocation target for the Variable Fund is 70% for domestic stocks and 30% for international stocks. This allocation is reviewed annually and stocks are the same as the holdings that are found in the Core Fund. The SWIB uses both active and passive strategies in managing the assets of the WRS. Most assets are managed internally. External managers are used to manage investments that involve skills, locations, support systems or intensity of staff attention that make direct management by the SWIB staff impractical or less cost effective. External managers are selected based on investment style, performance, experience, and company size and fee structure. Allocations to stocks, bonds, and other asset classes are determined by a strategic process and are reviewed annually by the Board of Trustees. Quantitative asset/liability modeling and qualitative evaluation are used to select the allocation mix.
