The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public. Established in 1970, the IOM is the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, which was chartered under President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Nearly 150 years later, the National Academy of Sciences has expanded into what is collectively known as the National Academies, which comprises the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Research Council, and the IOM.

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) formed the Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC) in 1980 as a permanent committee to bring the resources of the Academy to bear on critical problems of international security and arms control. CISAC, in the Policy and Global Affairs Division, draws from the nation’s finest scientific, technical, engineering and medical talent to advise the government, contribute to the work of non-governmental organizations, and inform the public about scientific and technical issues related to international security and arms control. CISAC’s work benefits from a rotating membership of distinguished scientists, policy and military experts. With several research centers, an extensive health system and nearly 200 years of history, Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) is one of the premier medical schools in the United States. The university divides its academics and research into six schools and colleges: * College of Graduate Studies * Medical College * School of Health Professions * School of Nursing * School of Pharmacy * School of Population Health These academic divisions provide support for every area of study in health and medicine, from Biomedical Science to Public Health. Graduate certificates, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees are available, and the School of Nursing offers many baccalaureate programs, as well. Because of the wide range of programs available, admissions procedures vary at Thomas Jefferson University.
