Biography

Scott is a former Assistant United States Attorney who focuses on complex criminal law matters including:

* Internal investigations
* Grand jury investigations
* Trial practice

Scott has recently represented corporate and individual clients in matters involving allegations of:

* Health care fraud
* Tax fraud
* Trade secret theft
* Bribery

Scott has a proven track record of preventing indictment of clients, even where others under investigation have been charged. When matters have to be tried, Scott has the experience and skills to obtain positive results. Scott is a member of the federal Trail Bar in Chicago, has tried numerous federal jury trials, and is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law where he teaches a course on trial advocacy.

Former Federal Prosecutor

Before joining Reed Smith, Scott was a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago for over seven years. During that time, Scott focused on complex fraud and public corruption matters, leading numerous multi-year and multi-agency investigations and prosecutions. Based on Scott’s investigative skills and experience, he was selected to train federal agents on how to investigate crimes involving cyber-fraud.

Illinois State Representative

In 2012, Scott was elected to the Illinois General Assembly. In his role as a State Representative, Scott serves on the influential House Judiciary, Insurance and Pension committees, among others. Scott has been featured in many news articles for his leadership on state finance and criminal justice issues. In 2013, Scott received the prestigious Jenner & Block Award in connection with groundbreaking legislation he introduced to prevent individuals from being wrongfully convicted. In 2014, based on Scott’s experience as a federal prosecutor, the Illinois Legislative Audit Commission turned to him for guidance on the impact a Commission proceeding would have on a federal criminal probe of a state grant program.
