Biography

Steve Belcaster brings more than 20 years of construction experience to his role as a Senior Project Manager at U.S. Equities. His wide variety of projects include sports complexes, office buildings, laboratory and research facilities, hospitals, residential towers, libraries, detention centers, hotels and casinos, courthouses and retail malls.

Belcaster is currently working on the $21.5 million new Poetry Foundation Headquarters, which includes editorial offices, library/archives, large meeting room with optimal acoustics and a large garden area at the entry of the new facility.

Since joining U.S. Equities, Belcaster has worked on a number of high-profile projects. Most recently, Belcaster oversaw and coordinated the development of the $168 million, 810-bed University of Chicago's New Residence Hall and Dining Facility. The dining facility connects to the historic Burton Judson Dormitory, which was the old cafeteria. The new facility seats 525 people including the renovated old cafeteria which was converted into seating. The project also included a new loading dock connected by a tunnel to the new facilities.

Belcaster was also an integral part of the development team of the $350 million, 1.1 million square foot Compuware headquarters building in downtown Detroit. He was responsible for coordination between the architect and the construction manager, tracking the progress of submittals, identifying increases in the scope and initiating creative solutions to minimize the increases. Belcaster also oversaw the attached 2,100-vehicle precast concrete garage, which was a design-build contract. The new Compuware Headquarters was completed three months ahead of schedule and millions of dollars under budget.

Additionally, Belcaster was a critical team member on the construction of Cloud Gate a.k.a. "The Bean," the Anish Kapoor-designed sculpture at Chicago's world-renown Millennium Park. The 66 foot long x 32 foot high x 44 foot wide bean-shaped, 120-ton sculpture is one of the major donor enhancements to the lakefront park, which opened in July 2004. The self-supporting sculpture has no inner bracing and is constructed of 168 stainless steel panels, some weighing as much as 2,000 pounds, with a seamless, mirror-like finish.

Belcaster also completed a major expansion program for WBEZ-FM, Chicago Public Radio, located at Navy Pier. The complex, $10.5 million, 21,000 square foot expansion covered half of the existing Navy Pier main loading dock, which remained open throughout construction. Additionally, their existing office facility was re-programmed to compliment the expansion space, including a new radio studio, board room, media storage and data center.

Prior to joining U.S. Equities in 2000, Belcaster was a project manager with Morse Diesel International where his pre-construction experience included estimating, scheduling, cost comparisons, bid packages, claims and change orders, and trade coordination. Belcaster was involved in numerous projects, including the $175 million United Center, a new sports arena for the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks; the $95 million, 35-story U.S. Gypsum Building in Chicago; the $80 million, 3,000-inmate Cook County Jail Maximum Division XI in Chicago; the $85 million Desert Inn Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas; the $185 million, 28-story Federal Courthouse in St. Louis, MO; and the Shops at North Bridge, a $90 million, 18-story hotel and retail mall located on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. The Shops at North Bridge involved retaining the original skin of an historic landmark building that was removed, piece-by-piece, cleaned, restored and re-installed on a new structural frame. Belcaster was also the Assistant Project Manager for the Chicago Children's Memorial Research Center.

Belcaster received a Bachelor degree in construction technology from Purdue University.

Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, is the flagship university of the six-campus Purdue University system. Purdue was founded on May 6, 1869, as a land-grant university when the Indiana General Assembly, taking advantage of the Morrill Act, accepted a donation of land and money from Lafayette businessman John Purdue to establish a college of science, technology, and agriculture in his name. The first classes were held on September 16, 1874, with six instructors and 39 students. The university was founded with the gift of $150,000 from John Purdue, a Lafayette business leader and philanthropist, along with $50,000 from Tippecanoe County, and 150 acres (0.6 km²) of land from Lafayette residents in support of the project. In 1869, it was decided that the new school would be built near the city of Lafayette and established as Purdue University, in the name of the institution’s principal benefactor. The West Lafayette campus offers more than 200 majors for undergraduates, over 70 master’s and doctoral programs, and professional degrees in pharmacy and veterinary medicine. In addition, Purdue has 18 intercollegiate sports teams and more than 850 student organizations. Today, Purdue is a member of the Big Ten Conference. Purdue enrolls the second largest student body of any university in Indiana as well as the fourth largest international student population of any university in the United States.
