Biography

Susan Onuma is a partner in Kelley Drye’s New York office and co-chair of its Asia practice group. For more than 25 years, she has represented and advised Japanese corporations and individuals in the United States, helping them achieve their varied business goals.

Ms. Onuma regularly advises clients on legal issues associated with the manufacture and distribution of products in the U.S. and internationally. Her industry experience includes chemicals, consumer goods, electronics, food, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and medical products. Her expertise includes facilitating the negotiation of mergers, joint ventures, acquisitions and distributorship and sales representative agreements. In every matter, her formidable legal skills are enhanced by her ability to facilitate deals involving parties of different cultures.

In addition to helping her clients conclude successful business transactions and representing them when disputes arise, Ms. Onuma often serves as the U.S. general counsel for her clients’ subsidiary companies, guiding management in all facets of their business operations to ensure their awareness and compliance with the myriad regulations and laws that affect them, including those dealing with corporate governance, employment, export controls and antitrust.

In addition to co-chairing the firm’s Asia practice group, Ms. Onuma oversees Kelley Drye’s Immigration practice group which handles business immigration and visa matters, including E, L and H nonimmigrant visas and employment-based immigrant visas. She also represents individual clients in the area of estate planning and administration of estates.

Ms. Onuma is deeply involved in various business and civic organizations that are dedicated to supporting the Japanese community in the United States. She was the first female President of the Japanese American Association of New York; she serves on the Board of Trustees of the Japanese American National Museum; she is on the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Japan Council; and she is Corporate Secretary and counsel to the Japan Society in New York. Susan was recently selected one of the Top 50 Women in Business by NJBiz Magazine.
