Biography

Sylvie Bermann was appointed Ambassador for France to the PRC in February 2011. She is the first female ambassador in the history of France-China relations since the 19th century. Ambassador Berman has worked previously for the French Foreign Ministry in different roles. She served in Hong Kong, Beijing, Moscow, at the French delegation to the United Nations in New York and in Brussels (EU) as ambassador to the political and security committee of the EU. She graduated from the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales, the Institut d’études politiques, and Beijing Language and Culture University, and is proficient in Chinese

Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU; Chinese: ??????; pinyin: Beijing Yuyán Dàxué), colloquially known in Chinese as Yuyan Xueyuan (Chinese: ??????; pinyin: Beijing Yuyán Xuéyuàn), has the main aim of teaching the Chinese language and culture to foreign students. However, it also takes Chinese students specializing in foreign languages and other relevant subjects of humanities and social sciences, and trains teachers of Chinese as a foreign language. It used to be the only institute of this kind in China. Beijing Language and Culture University is often called "Little United Nations" in China because of its very large number of international students from various countries.
