Biography

Terry McMahan - President of University of Hodges

Terry P. McMahan, an inspiring role model and visionary leader,
charts a successful course for Hodges University while broadening
the horizons for local students and leaders of tomorrow.
Raised on a dairy farm on the East Coast of Florida, McMahan
learned the rewards of hard work and perseverance. He enjoyed this
lifestyle with his close knit family, but by the time he graduated
from high school he was ready for a change of scenery and new
experiences. He joined the Merchant Marine, broadening his
horizons while sailing to exotic ports.
In 1967, McMahan enrolled at Palm Beach Community College,
intending to study pre-veterinary medicine. However, after several
courses, he found himself more interested in politics and law.
McMahan graduated from Florida State University in 1971 with a
bachelor’s degree in government and earned his Juris Doctor from
the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.
The young attorney began his career working in a law firm as a trial
lawyer and then, ever the entrepreneur, started his own legal practice. Five years later, he incorporated his
management and sales skills to become vice president of legal affairs and eventually president of Zimmer
Corporation, a manufacturer of mobile homes, recreational vehicles and custom yachts.
The founders of Hodges University (formerly International College) recruited McMahan shortly after the
institution opened in 1991. As president for the past 16 years, he has led the school from college to university
status and significantly increased the number of degree programs and faculty. Colleagues cite McMahan’s
high moral standards, strong work ethic and compassion for others as his outstanding qualities. Students view
him as an approachable leader and a partner in their education.
Junior Achievement’s 2007 Laureate constantly reaches out beyond the university, serving the community on
the boards of the Economic Development Council of Collier County, the Greater Naples Chamber of
Commerce and the Lee County Public Schools Foundation. For years, McMahan and his team have been
partners in the educational mission of Junior Achievement. In 2006, he received the Leadership in Education
Award from the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education. He was also recently honored by
the Southwest Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for his commitment and support of the chamber’s
college scholarship program.
This distinguished businessman is married to college sweetheart Susan Chambers; the couple has two
daughters Kelly and Jill and a grandson, Kiernan.
Because of his commitment to education and his valuable contributions to the community, Junior
Achievement of Southwest Florida is proud to honor Terry McMahan as an outstanding Laureate for the
2007 Business Leadership Hall of Fame.
