The Honorable Thomas L. Ludington was nominated to the United States District Court by President George W. Bush in 2002 and commissioned in June 2006. Prior to his appointment, he practiced with the law firm of Currie and Kendall, P.C., now known as Currie Kendall, P.C., from 1980 to 1995. Thereafter, he was elected to the 42nd Circuit Court, State of Michigan, beginning term on January 1, 1995 and served as chief judge in that court until his appointment to the federal bench.

He was born in Midland, Michigan in 1953 and attended public schools. He received his B.A. cum laude from Albion College in 1976 and attended the University of Sussex, Brighton, England with an emphasis in philosophy and economics, 1974-1975. He graduated from University of San Diego School of Law in 1979 and studied at the Institute on International and Comparative Law, Paris, France in 1978. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1979 in the State of California and in 1980 in the State of Michigan.

Judge Ludington has taught various courses in the fields of law and banking, bankruptcy and law office management. He serves as a director with Albion College Board of Trustees, Saginaw Valley State University Foundation and Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation. He was selected as a Fellow of the American Bar Association and the Michigan State Bar Association.

The University of San Diego School of Law, commonly referred to as USD Law, is a law school located on the 182-acre campus of the University of San Diego in San Diego, California in the community of Linda Vista. Founded in 1954, the law school has held ABA approval since 1961. It joined the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) in 1966. USD Law offers Juris Doctor (J.D.) degrees in either a three-year full-time or a four-year part-time program. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (in case citations, E.D. Mich.) is the Federal district court with jurisdiction over of the eastern portion of the state of Michigan. The Court is based in Detroit, with courthouses also located in Ann Arbor, Bay City, Flint, and Port Huron. The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit has appellate jurisdiction over the court (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit).
