HFS typically allocates client assets to advisors that are unaffiliated with Goldman Sachs. However, in certain circumstances, they allocate client assets to advisors that are affiliated with Goldman Sachs. The firm's funds-of-hedge funds products invest in underlying funds that may employ a broad range of alternative investment strategies, including strategies within one or more of the following four hedge fund sectors: the equity long/short sector, the relative value sector, the event driven sector and the tactical trading sector. HFS generally employs a dynamic investment process in that includes advisor selection, portfolio design and ongoing risk analysis and monitoring. The firm has developed computer systems and operational capabilities to assist in the monitoring of advisors. Both qualitative and quantitative criteria are factored into the advisor selection process. These criteria include portfolio management experience, strategy, style, historical performance, including risk profile and drawdown.

Co-Head, Consumer Investment Management Division (Co-Chief Executive Officer)

GS Investment Strategies (GSIS) offers investment management advice primarily through alternative investment funds including hedge funds, private equity funds, private equity co-investment funds, and mutual funds. The firm's investment strategies cover a wide variety of asset classes and strategies including long/short strategies, relative value and arbitrage strategies, event-driven strategies, long-only strategies and private investment strategies. In managing their multi-strategy advisory accounts, GSIS is more opportunistic in targeting specific long/short, relative value and arbitrage and event-driven strategies. They may also manage advisory accounts that utilize one or more of these strategies. GSIS' long/short strategies focus on taking long positions with respect to securities, currencies, commodities and other instruments, or baskets of these or similar instruments, that they believe are undervalued, and/or taking short positions where they believe such instruments or baskets are overvalued. The firm's relative value and arbitrage strategies seek to profit from the relative mispricing of related assets. Although these strategies are fundamentally driven, they may also have quantitative elements and may be based on theoretical or historical pricing relationships. GSIS' event-driven strategies seek to exploit situations in which an anticipated corporate event is expected to generate price movement including mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, bankruptcies, recapitalizations, spin-offs, split-offs, liquidations, regulatory or legal developments and other events. The firm's long-only strategies involve taking only long positions with respect to equity securities and certain other instruments, or baskets of these or similar instruments, that GSIS believes are undervalued and/or that GSIS believes have potential for growth in value over time. In addition, GSIS manages advisory accounts that utilize private investment strategies that focus on investing through privately-negotiated transactions in privately-held companies or assets with growth potential. They manage accounts that invest in private investments, as well as accounts that co-invest alongside other advisory accounts in a single private investment.

Though the Fund pursues its three program interests in a variety of geographic contexts, it has identified several specific locations on which to concentrate cross-programmatic attention. The Fund refers to these as "RBF pivotal places": subnational areas, nation-states, or cross-border regions that have special importance with regard to the Fund's substantive concerns and whose future will have disproportionate significance for the future of a surrounding region, an ecosystem, or the world. The Fund currently works in three pivotal places: New York City, Western Balkans, and Southern China. Discerning and communicating the impact of our grantmaking and other program activities are essential to fulfilling our mission and commitment to stewardship, transparency, and accountability. The RBF carefully monitors performance—both institutional effectiveness and program impact.
