Silicon Prairie Advisors (SPA) focuses on investments in public securities both directly and through selected funds managers. The firm also invests in other venture funds both directly and through side-by-side fund and in select directed private investments. The firm manages the Silicon Prairie Partners LP (the SPP Fund).SPA invests the SPP Fund's directed investment capital into companies with enabling technologies which have the potential to impact business productivity, energy and the environment. The firm seeks to utilize relationships developed through their investments in other venture funds, their Strategic Partners and their Special Advisors to identify potential portfolio companies and/or enhance the value of existing ones.SPA evaluates structures and monitors the SPP Fund's investments. The firm seeks to identify and gaining access to 3 main types of investments: (1) pooled investment vehicles (2) directed investments and public equities. The SPP Fund's pooled investments focus on vehicles run by private equity managers with attractive track records. SPA targets a variety of opportunities including buyout funds, capital structure-based funds (mezzanine financing or distressed securities investments), asset-based funds (oil, gas, timber and other natural resources) and venture capital funds.SPA expects that the pooled investment portion of the SPP Fund will be predominately invested in venture capital funds. SPA seeks to make direct and indirect investments mainly by investing in venture capital funds and co-investing in those venture capital funds' direct investments. These investments include a variety of early- and late-stage investments in technology companies engaged primarily in business productivity and education, energy and the environment. The SPP Fund's directed investment strategy includes making direct investments in technology companies engaged in the same industries as its pooled investment strategy through privately-negotiated, direct transactions generally sourced on a co-investment basis. SPA seeks to identify directed investment opportunities better than investors could do individually through their contact network. The SPP Fund investments range from $50,000 to $300,000 per company; thus, the fund does not act as a lead or sole investor. SPA looks for opportunities to participate in investment rounds in which a small investment is permitted and which are led by well-known venture capital funds that have already conducted due diligence and negotiated terms. The SPP Fund also invests in angel or early seed investment rounds. The SPP Fund invests in public equities by allocating the majority of their assets earmarked for public equities to a select group of investment managers who have expertise in investing both long and short in the technology growth sector. In allocating the SPP Fund's public equity capital, SPA seeks to capitalize on the emerging technology sector with emphasis on the following sub-sectors and industries: (1) core technology including software, hardware/disk drive, micro computers, devices/chip manufacturers, semiconductors, e-Commerce and network connectivity (2) media communications including satellite, broadcasting, telecommunications and wireless and (3) medical technology including biotechnology, pharmaceutical services and devices. While the majority of assets will be allocated to managers, from the APP Fund may occasionally make individual public equity investments.Depending on market conditions, SPA expects that 34% of the SPP Fund's assets will be allocated to pooled investment vehicles, 33% to directed investments and 33% to public equities. The SPP Fund targets a compound annual rate of return on contributed capital greater than 20% (net of all fees, expenses and carried interest) over the life of the fund.
