The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, commonly referred to as Berkeley Law and Boalt Hall, is one of 14 schools and colleges at the University of California, Berkeley. Berkeley Law is consistently ranked as one of the top law schools in the nation, with acceptance rates lower than every school except Yale and Stanford. The Department of Jurisprudence was founded at Berkeley in 1894. In 1912, the department was renamed the School of Jurisprudence, which was then renamed the School of Law in 1950. The School was originally located in the center of the main UC Berkeley campus in the Boalt Memorial Hall of Law, built in 1911 with funds largely from Elizabeth Josselyn Boalt donated in memory of her late husband, John Henry Boalt. In 1951, the School moved to its current location in the new Boalt Hall, at the southeast corner of the campus, and the old Boalt Hall was renamed Durant Hall. In April 2008, the law school rebranded itself from "Boalt Hall" to "Berkeley Law", in order to more closely tie the law school's name with the campus upon which it resides. The administration hopes that this move will further increase the law school's prestige, since people will now associate it with the Berkeley campus.

Advances in information technology present enormous opportunities to improve people’s lives. Markle works to realize the potential of information technology to address previously intractable public problems, for the health and security of all Americans. Overview John and Mary R. Markle established the Markle Foundation in 1927 "to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge among people of the United States, and to promote the general good of mankind." Markle’s mission has evolved over the years. Markle led the expansion of talent in academic medicine from 1934 to 1969. It shifted at that point to developing and using communication and information to enhance lifelong learning and to promote an informed citizenry. In 1998, Markle President Zoë Baird and the Board of Directors redirected the foundation to focus on harnessing emerging technologies to improve the lives of all Americans. Early in Ms. Baird’s tenure, Markle initiated collaborations to expand access to the Internet in developing countries and worked to ensure public representation in global Internet governance processes. Markle has worked over the last decade in the areas of National Security and Health. Markle’s work has helped strengthen national security by improving how the federal government shares information and better health and health care by improving how medical professionals and consumers communicate. These major reforms were embodied in sweeping national security and health care law. Additional Information on Markle’s Work in Health | Additional Information on Markle’s Work in National Security Markle is currently working on a new initiative to set our country on a path to build the American Dream for a new era by leveraging technology and advancing public and private leadership and individual action. Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale Law School is one of the world’s premier law schools. It offers an unmatched environment of excellence and educational intimacy in the form of world renowned faculty, small classes, limitless opportunities for clinical training, and strong encouragement of public service. The Law School is small by design; its impact on the world is measured by its accomplished graduates and its ongoing scholarship and outreach through numerous centers and projects. For students, the experience is unparalleled. The faculty-student ratio supports a vast array of courses and opportunities for independent research and student-organized seminars. Students get practical training by representing real clients in clinics starting in their first year. Throughout, a spirit of collaboration reigns. All first-term courses are ungraded, and subsequent classes are graded honors/pass/low pass. Yale Law School is unique among law schools in that it produces leaders in all walks of life: distinguished deans and faculty members at law schools across the country and the world; industry CEOs and corporate counsels; founders of nongovernmental organizations and other nonprofit entities; entrepreneurs; government servants in federal, state, and local offices and the judiciary--just a few areas in which our alumni's talent and passion and dedication have made a difference. Among the School’s graduates are U.S. Presidents and Supreme Court Justices; and among its far-reaching projects, the Information Society Project and the China Center.
